When Billy, a carnival barker, falls in love with the lovely Julie Jordan and marries her, he shortly finds himself bitter and unemployed, unable to provide for his young, pregnant wife. He resolves to fix his situation by taking part in a robbery which goes very wrong. Before a heavenly judge, Billy pleads for another chance to return to Earth, to redeem himself by helping his now grown-up, troubled daughter Louise.
